Photoshoot

21/11/13

Today we did our photoshoot for our digipak and magazine advert. After creating drafts and taking into consideration our audience feedback we were able to start taking photos.  We used Kieran Holmes Darby in stead of Francis Pennington purely because he was available and had the costume we wanted. We wanted him in black jeans, plain white top and an open check shirt as this is a very natural, casual look but also looks relatively smart. This kind of outfit was a common convention in this genre because of the casual look it brings.

The photoshoot was done on the Howdale park, this was used because it is close by and always available. We tried a range of different angles for the shots and positions to see what would work better and when we came back to the Sixth Form we went through and as a team decided which were better and more professional.

The photoshoot went very well, we planned everything out for the timings, location, casting and costume. The weather was perfect for the shoot and we didn't have any technical problems due to our advanced planning. We knew exactly what shots we wanted to it wasn't very time consuming and we went from the plans and drafts of our digipak and magazine advert.

Above is a 3D carousel of the images we took today that we had to decide between. You can see the range of shots and angles we used as well as positions in those Kieran is in to get the best photo we could. Above are a mixture between the photos we have decided not to use and also the ones we will be using. We have used a photo editing website called picmonkey to edit the photos we want to use and they are below.

We have chosen the front panel below over the other shots because it is a better distance and needed little editing, the way Kieran is looking down at the guitar and playing we really liked because it looked more natural and as though he is actually playing whereas the others were a bit more fake. The back panel we have chosen this one because he is in the same position as in the front panel and we liked how the artist was sort of blurred out with the grass in the foreground in more focus. We liked this contrast rather than the others which is why we have used this. The inside panel we have chosen this one over the others because the guitar is more straight and at a better angle than the other photos we took. This photo also needed less editing than the others which we also thought was good. The bottom image will be stretched across the three panels in that section as a continuous shot. We also chose this photo because it was more similar to the drawing in our digipak in that there is a gap at the end of the photo, the guitar is straighter and simpley looks better than the other photos.

After we have put these photos together in Corel Draw we think that the digipak looks to green, there's too much grass in the surrounding and doesn't look professional so we are looking at both a coloured version and a black and white version to see if it looks more professional.

Magazine Advert

For this we only had a couple of shots to choose from because we knew exactly what we wanted the photo to look like. All we needed to decide was which one fitted better. Below is the one we chose to leave and to the left is the edited version of our favourite one we will be using in the final edit of our magazine advert.

We chose it over the one below because it looks more realistic, the guitar is wonky and doesn't look as though it's resting on the wall. The guitar was also in better positioning in the one we have chosen rather than the one below, it is lower down so we can fit more of Kieran's legs in the shot.

As a group we each brought different ideas to the final designs for our digipak and magazine advert.

  • Reecia thought it would ge a good idea to use natural lighting to reinforce the organic genre, she also said she thought it would be a good idea for the artist to hold the guitar rather than have it standing next to him. This is because it connotes his musical talent to the audience and plays his own music.

  • My idea when taking the photos was that we should have a lot of natural elements in our setting, hence the grass/trees to reinforce the organic genre. I also said that we should use a depth of field technique for the bottom image so the focus is on the guitar.

  • Emily suggested taking photos at different levels to create a more professional image. She also suggested to include the guitar in the panel with the tree to reinforce the artists musical talent.
