Magazine Advert

19/11/13

Also today Emily and I have made drafts for a magazine advert, we have brought together ideas from our research into general magazine adverts and genre specific adverts. This research gives us a good idea of what a magazine advert should look like.

These are our first two drafts. The first we thought about showing the artist playing the guitat, we designed this to only show a part of his face. We could have the left half of his face showing while he is looking down at the guitar, we have done this because this was found to be a common code and convention in magazine adverts. This challenges Richard Dyer's theory as this advert shows the attention isn't on the artists face but more the guitar and his talent.

We have included star ratings and quotes as these are commonly used to help sell the album and the artist rather than themselves. Also the title of the artist is in the largest text at the top of the advert with the title of the album just below. The placement in both adverts fit in the rule of thirds giving a professional look.

The second idea is similar to one of our digipak ideas, we like the link between the photo and the lyrics 'falling upwards'. This again doesn't reveal his face as we want the focus to be on the guitar and the natural, raw elements in the genre.

Our third idea we wanted to reinforce the acoustic guitar in the genre bringing more attention to the talent of the artist. This idea shows a link between the guitar and the music to the natural, raw elements and the surroundings with the tree.

I like this idea because of the simplicity however there is no sign of the artist at all so the audience will have to read the advert and be drawn in by the text rather than the image.

Because of this we have placed the title of the artist in the largest font right at the top of the page to draw in the audience with captions below such as ''includes the hit single 'Falling Upwards'' to help promote the artist and the album. As we haven't included the artist in this magazine advert draft we are purely relying on the other aspects shown to help promote the artist.

Again we have included quotes, the record label logo in the bottom right corner, and a small image of the album as these are all general codes and conventions which we have taken forward into our drafts.
