Today as a group Emily Smith and I started to look into our audeince research. This includes:

  • Who will we be asking

  • Do we have a mass or niche target audience

  • Is it mixed gender

  • What age group are we aiming for

For this type of genre we have decided as a group that the most popular age range for our primary audience is from around 13 to about 30 as it meets the popularity needs with the younger generations but the tone and relaxing vibe meets those needs of the older generation. The song lyrics are generally relatable to our primary audience as well making it more appealing to the bigger mass market. The image of acoustic folk genre has become more and more popular becoming a fashion style such as Ed Sheeran, he brought a new style of presenting acoustic music to the audience and became very popular, this was a new shift to the sound as he includes raps as well and calm tones in one song making it unique and therefore popular. Our primary audience also ranges from both males and females as the lyrics are relatable and different therefore, the calm atmostphere they give also makes it appealing to everyone when they are in a certain mood to listen to this type of genre.

Our secondary audience ranges from ages of about 25 - 60 again because it meets the needs of the audience as well as being relatable to a mass audience. This again is appealing to both males and females due to the relaxing vibe that is hard to find in other genres. Our secondary audience are most likely to come across this genre because of their children etc listening to it and therefore using a similar technique to word of mouth marketing they will listen to it also therefore becoming a mass market.

We have conducted an interview process to find out our qualitative research answers and a questionnaire process to find out our quantitative research answers considering the questions on the left. We thought of our questions together as a group effort and photos of the questions of both our interviews and questionnaires are below. Our interview questions were done on camera as a further way to present our data, these questions were designed to know what our target audience wants to see in an acoustic folk music video. More specifically we asked about the editing techniques, the setting and mise en scene, the camerawork techniques and what kind of mood they would want to see within this genre. In addition to this we also wanted to know what they thought would be the most important aspect in relation to the theorists Dyer and Goodwin.

Below is the video Emily Smith and I have filmed, edited and published together on our interview questions. We used this opportunity to further improve our editing skills and techniques such as fades and overlaying music. To the left are the questions we asked.

Below are the questions we asked a range of people to find out who our audience is and if they listen to and enjoy the acoustic folk music genre. From this we were able to calculate our primary and secondary audience as well as if this genre is more popular to males or females. We also wanted to know how often, if so, they listen to this genre as well as calculating their age groups and how often the age groups listen to the genre compared to eachother.

We want to know who our target audience is and how we can create our music video to fit their needs and expectations of an acoustic folk music video. From our audience research we have found that this genre fits every age group from very young teenagers at the age of 12/13 to the ages of 60/70 as it covers popular artists such as Ed Sheeran and Mumford and Sons to Biffy Clyro. The genre is very calm and relaxing which suits everyones needs when they need comforting or cheering up so therefore has a very big market covering a massive range of ages in audience therefore needs to be appropriate but entertaining for each age group. We conducted 7 questionnaires to ask a range of different people asking their genre to see if it appeals to more males or females and then their age to know whether it is more popular in a specific age group followed by whether they actually listen to this genre and if so how often they listen to it so we can get an understanding of how popular it is and whether it is more listened to by a younger generation or the older generation most often. You can see from the pie chart that 60% of males liked the genre and 40% of female like the genre from the group we asked.

Conventions of Audience Research

17/11/13

There are a few main points we have gathered from our audience research which include:

  • The artist wearing casual clothing and natural hair and make up

  • The setting to be located in a natural setting like a field or somewhere outside was mentioned a lot

  • To use both performance and narrative typology as this tells the story but also sells the artist at the same time

  • The editing to be slow paced but use a range of shots and pans/tracks

  • The camerawork to range from close up to long shot to show feelings as well as body language

  • The lighting to also be quite natural key because of the natural setting
